Kaijia Academy

Introduction

Kaijia Academy was established in August 2020 and named after Cheng Kaijia, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a famous theoretical physicist, recipient of the “Two Bombs and One Star” merit medal, and an alumnus of Nanjing University.The Academy has first-year students including three majors of Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence. The Dean of the Academy is Professor Li Xuan Dong, the recipient of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund and the Dean of the School of Software of Nanjing University.


The Academy has established a Academy Council, which is composed of the Dean of the Academy, the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee in charge of student work in the Department of Computer Science and Technology, the School of Software, and the School of Artificial Intelligence, the Vice Dean/Deputy Director of Teaching and Learning in charge of undergraduate teaching, and the Director of the Student Affairs Center of the Academy, mainly responsible for studying the daily construction of the Academy, talent training and regular communication and coordination with relevant departments.


The Student Affairs Center of the Academy is equipped with three full-time counselors, and together with the hired freshmen mentors and peer mentors, who form a nurturing team with clear responsibilities and division of labor to promote the construction work of the Academy and strengthen student education management.


The Academy is committed to carrying forward the noble character of Cheng Kaijia, who was self-reliant, indignant, rigorous and pragmatic, devoted to science, and courageous, and to cultivating highly qualified and innovative talents in computer science with the spirit of “pioneering, innovation, hard work, and dedication”, closely focusing on the fundamental task of establishing moral education, relying on the “Kaijia Growth Classroom”, and through cultural education, faith navigation, academic career initiation, and practical navigation. It helps students to strengthen their ideals and beliefs, enhance their knowledge and self-awareness, and open up their professional knowledge, so that they can adapt to the university life better and faster, and promote students to strengthen their beliefs, increase their knowledge, enrich their learning, broaden their horizons, improve their literacy and perfect their personality.


Cheng Kaijia (August 3, 1918 - November 17, 2018)

Born in August 1918 in Wujiang, Jiangsu Province, Cheng Kaijia received his Ph.D. degree in philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, UK in 1948 and was elected as a member of the Academy of Sciences of China in 1980. He was a professor of Zhejiang University and Nanjing University, deputy director of the Institute of Nuclear Weapons of the Second Ministry of Machinery Industry, deputy director and director of the Institute of Nuclear Experimental Base of the National Defense Science and Technology Commission and deputy commander of the base, and a member and consultant (at the level of corps commander) of the Standing Committee of the Science and Technology Commission of the National Defense Science and Technology Commission (General Armament Department). Cheng is one of the pioneers of China’s nuclear weapons industry and one of the founders of the nuclear test science and technology system. He has worked diligently in the field of national defense science all his life and made outstanding contributions to the development of China’s nuclear weapons industry and national defense high technology.
