Introduction

Yuxiu Academy is for the construction of new engineering disciplines, and contains two major categories of freshmen: experimental engineering classes and electronic information classes. After a year of education in the Academy, students will participate in the triage to different faculties and majors.


Based on the new technological era of rapid development of big data and artificial intelligence, relying on the profound humanistic background and rigorous scientific spirit of Nanjing University, and insisting on “a science-based and engineering-oriented integration of science and engineering”, the Engineering Experimental Class focuses on the strong disciplinary advantages and elite faculty of the School of Modern Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Engineering Management, and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and devotes itself to cultivating comprehensive new engineering leading talents with solid basic theories, broad knowledge fields, outstanding engineering practice ability, cutting-edge innovative thinking, broad international vision, and first-class comprehensive quality.


Among them, the School of Modern Engineering and Applied Science aims at the international scientific frontier and the general layout of national industrial development, centering on materials disciplines and extending to optics, energy and life medicine, looking for breakthroughs from the deep cross-fertilization of disciplines to address the common needs that human beings cannot avoid. It offers five undergraduate majors, including Materials Physics, Materials Chemistry, Optoelectronic Information Engineering, New Energy, and Biomedical Engineering. In 2015, it was selected as the “Internationalization Demonstration Academy” by the Ministry of Education, and it is a key department in internationalization, as well as the main participant of the 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of “Artificial Microstructure Science and Technology” and Nanjing National Laboratory of Microstructure.


The School of Engineering Management has three undergraduate majors, including automation, industrial engineering and financial engineering, and two first-level disciplines, management science and engineering and control science and engineering, with a complete talent cultivation system from undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees. The Academy upholds the motto of “Learning the Way to Reward Practicality, and Being Responsible for the Group”, and always takes the cultivation of undergraduate talents as the fundamental task. The “Computer and Financial Engineering Crossover Experimental Class” program jointly developed with the Department of Computer Science and Technology has become a “big hit” for students.


The School of Architecture and Urban Planning has two undergraduate majors, Architecture and Urban and Rural Planning, which are integrated from the engineering background of Architecture and the science background of Urban and Rural Planning, with distinctive characteristics and high internationalization. Architecture focuses on theoretical research, architectural innovation and internationalization, and is renowned for its theory, innovation and internationalization. Urban and Rural Planning specializes in system analysis, comprehensive analysis and policy analysis of urban areas, and is unique and influential in the urban and rural planning field at home and abroad.


Students of electronic information will enter the Academy of Electronic Science and Engineering. The Academy includes four undergraduate majors: Electronic Information Science and Technology, Communication Engineering, Microelectronics Science and Engineering, and Integrated Circuit Design and System Integration. The School adopts the problem-oriented “New Engineering” teaching model to cultivate “future-oriented, top-of-the-line” leaders and innovative talents in the field of electronic information. With three national experimental teaching platforms, including the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and the National Off-Campus Practice Education Base of Nanjing University-Jiangsu Changdian Technology Company Engineering Practice Education Center, the Academy has laid a solid foundation for the cultivation of electronic information talents.


The core point of the new engineering construction, which is a necessary path, strategic support and leading force for the construction of China’s educational power, is to improve the cultivation capacity of talents. Yuxiu Academy will participate in the “3-3” talent cultivation system of Nanjing University, focusing on cultivating forward-looking and leading talents in science and technology innovation for future development. In the development of the Academy, it has designed and formed many cultural activities with the characteristics of itself, focusing on the fundamental requirements of establishing moral education, promoting five education programs, strengthening university awareness education, general education and self-awareness education, and guiding new students to better and faster adapt to the university campus in terms of learning, living and culture. The “Becoming Yuxiu” program encourages teachers and students explore the connotation of education at Yuxiu Academy; the “Light Up the Future” program promotes the five-domain education simultaneously of “moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and social” for new engineering students; the “Inspirational Growth” program guides new students to know the university and themselves; the “Mentorship” program sets up new student mentors, peer mentors, career mentors, and corporate mentors, with four types of mentors covering all aspects to help new students grow and become successful.


In today’s changing world, it has become the consensus of the nation to master the core hard-core technologies, i.e. high and sophisticated technologies represented by artificial intelligence, biotechnology, optoelectronic chips, information technology, new materials, new energy, intelligent manufacturing, etc., so as to crack the “neck-stuck” technological problems. Students of Yuxiu Academy should set up ambitious ideals and beliefs, be brave in innovation, dare to take responsibility, actively participate in the construction of new engineering and the new industrial revolution, and contribute to the development of the motherland.


Gu Yuxiu

One of the founders of Chinese electrical, radio and aeronautical education and an outstanding literary and scientific master in modern Chinese history, is the namesake of the word “Yuxiu” in Yuxiu Academy. Thoroughly knowledgeable, he was a scientist, educator, poet, dramatist, musician, and Buddhist. He was a pioneer in electrical engineering and automatic control theory, a poet who wrote more than 7,000 poems in his lifetime, the originator of the “general method of solving quadratic equations”, and one of the originators of modern Chinese drama. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1928, the first Chinese to receive a doctorate in science, and in 1931 he became dean of the College of Engineering at National Central University, and from 1944 to 1945 he served as president of National Central University. During this period, he advocated a balanced philosophy of arts, science and engineering, emphasizing the need for students to have a broad knowledge and rich cultural heritage, which had a significant impact on the development of Nanjing University.


Strict in his academic discipline and sincere in his career, devoted himself to engineering education in Chinese universities and advocated science and technology to strengthen the country and serve the nation. During the war, Gu organized the relocation of colleges and universities to China and was courageous enough to take responsibility for the reunification of the motherland and the revival of the nation. Gu’s philosophy and spirit are worthy of learning and carrying forward by every “new engineering student” who carries the mission of the future development of the country. Zhu Shining, Dean of Yuxiu College, inscribed the words “Inherit the spirit of Gu Yuxiu, take a good path in life” for the new students, encouraging them not only to learn and train in engineering, but also to absorb the excellent culture of human beings, thus they can improve and grow in all aspects, and come forward when the country and society need us.
